Crochet Bala Ganesha (Vinayaka) – Step by Step Amigurumi Tutorial

This project is perfect for Ganesh Chaturthi decorations, handmade gifts, festive crochet projects, and amigurumi lovers. The instructions are beginner-friendly and include both increases and decreases for shaping.

Materials Needed

4-ply 100% Cotton Yarn (Cream & Yellow)
Crochet Hook – 2.5 mm
Metallic Zari Thread (for crown edging)
Fiberfill Stuffing
Tapestry Needle & Stitch Marker
4‑ply 100% cotton yarn – cream & green
2.5 mm crochet hook; 1 mm hook (for metallic thread)
Metallic thread (for bracelet/anklets/necklace & waist snake belt)
Fiberfill stuffing, stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors
Fabric glue (optional, for securing jewelry)

Step by Step Crochet Bala Ganesha Pattern

Part 1. This includes the head, trunk, ears, crown, and crown circle with step-by-step crochet instructions.

✨ Head

Start with a magic ring.

Row 1: 6 sc in magic ring. (6)

Row 2: inc in each st around. (12)

Row 3: (sc, inc) x6. (18)

Row 4: (sc, inc, sc) x6. (24)

Row 5: (3 sc, inc) x6. (30)

Rows 6–13: sc in each st around. (30)

Row 14: (3 sc, inv dec) x6. (24)

Row 15: (sc, inv dec, sc) x6. (18) – Stuff head firmly with fiberfill.

Row 16: (sc, inv dec) x6. (12)

Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.

✨ Trunk

Start with a magic ring.

Row 1: 6 sc in ring. (6)

Row 2–4: sc in each st around. (6)

Row 5: (sc, inc) x3. (9)

Rows 6–8: sc around. (9)

Row 9: (2 sc, inc) x3. (12)

Rows 10–14: sc around. (12)

Fasten off leaving tail for sewing. Bend trunk slightly to left.

✨ Right Ear

Ch 3.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch, 2 sc in last ch. (3)

Row 2: ch1, turn, sc in each st. (3)

Row 3: ch1, turn, 2 sc, inc in last st. (4)

Row 4: sc across. (4)

Row 5: sc 3, inc. (5)

Row 6: sc 4, inc. Work sc around border, add 1 dec at foundation chain.

Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.

✨ Left Ear

Ch 3.

Row 1: inc in 2nd ch, sc in next. (3)

Row 2: sc across. (3)

Row 3: inc, 2 sc. (4)

Row 4: sc across. (4)

Row 5: inc, 3 sc. (5)

Row 6: sc 4, inc. Work sc border, finish with 1 dec at foundation chain.

Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.

✨ Crown

Start with a magic ring.

Row 1: 6 sc. (6)

Row 2: inc in each st. (12)

Row 3: sc in each st. (12)

Row 4: (sc, inc) x6. (18)

Row 5: (2 sc, inc) x6. (24)

Row 6: sc around. (24)

Rows 7–8: hdc in each st. (24)

Fasten off. Decorate with metallic thread slip stitches around edge.

✨ Crown Circle

Start with magic ring, ch 3.

Row 1: 13 dc + ch 3 = 14 dc total.

Row 2: 2 dc in each st. (28)

Row 3: *2 sc, ch 4, sl st in same st* repeat around (14 points).

Fasten off. Add metallic slip stitch border.

Assembly

Attach the trunk at the center of the head, stitch the ears on either side, and place the crown & crown circle on top. Secure all parts with sewing needle.

Part 2: Hands, Legs & Body

Hands

From Part‑2 tutorial steps. Maintain right side facing out; lightly stuff only to hold shape.

R1: MR, 6 sc. (6)
R2: sc in each st. (6)
R3–R5: sc around. (6)
R6: FLO – [sc, inc] ×3 → (9). (Creates palm fold)
R7–R15: sc around (9); pause mid‑way to add a little stuffing; do not over‑stuff.
Fasten off with long tail for sewing; shape palm fold from the FLO ridge.

Bracelet: Metallic thread, ch≈10 (to fit around Row 6). Tie/secure; optionally glue; hide tails inside stuffing. Repeat for second hand.

Legs

Work in continuous rounds; keep stuffing very light/flexible.

R1: MR, 6 sc. (6)
R2–R4: sc around. (6)
R5: change color; [sc, inc] ×3 → (9)
R6–R8: sc around. (9)
R9: [2 sc, inc] ×3 → (12)
R10–R12: sc around. (12)
R13: [3 sc, inc] ×3 → (15)
R14–R16: sc around. (15)
Slip st, ch1, fasten off with long tail. Lightly stuff only to hold shape.

Anklet: Metallic thread, ch≈10 around R4–R5; knot, hide tails; dab of glue optional.

Body

Start with green; work even rounds, then change to cream; keep increases smooth and stuff firmly toward the end.

R1: MR, 6 sc. (6)
R2: inc around → 12.
R3: [sc, inc] ×6 → 18.
R4: [2 sc, inc] ×6 → 24.
R5: [3 sc, inc] ×6 → 30.
R6–R10: sc around (30); switch to cream.
R11–R16: sc around (30); stuff body.
R17: [3 sc, inv‑dec] ×6 → 24.
R18: [2 sc, inv‑dec] ×6 → 18.
R19: [sc, inv‑dec] ×6 → 12; fasten off. (Color‑change should remain at back.)

Waist Snake Belt (Metallic Thread)

Make a foundation chain to fit waist; in the middle work ch‑4, sl st (picot/hood). Shape like a small snake.
Pin position (right belly), knot at back; secure with fabric glue; sink tails into stuffing; let dry fully.

Necklace (Front Motif + Back Chains)

Front motif base: ch 21 + ch 1 (turning). Work: 2 sc, 2 hdc, 4 dc, 2 tr, center shell (tr, tr, picot, tr in same), then mirror back: 2 tr, 4 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc.
Back ties: make continuous chains to reach back; leave extra thread to adjust during assembly; secure later.

Crochet Laddu & Mini Trunk Bobble

Laddu (puff): With yellow, sl knot → ch3; in 1st ch, yarn‑over & draw up loop to ch‑2 height, repeat 4×; yo, pull through all loops, ch1. Leave 4–5″ tails; knot tails together to round the sphere.
Mini bobble for trunk: Cut 10–12″ yarn; wrap 8–9×; knot to form small bobble; tie to trunk tip.

Notes & Next Steps

Hands/legs: light stuffing only to keep shape flexible; hide jewelry tails in stuffing.
