Crochet Shell Stitch Beanie with Ear Padding

Crochet Shell Stitch Beanie with Ear Padding (Free Pattern + Video Tutorial)

If you’re looking for a cozy, warm, fall-inspired beanie with extra comfort around the ears, this Crochet Shell Stitch Beanie with Ear Padding is the perfect project. Made using medium-weight ombre yarn, this hat has a beautiful textured shell pattern and a snug ribbed band.

Materials

  • 4-ply medium weight acrylic yarn (Ombre – Loops & Threads)
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Written Pattern (Based 100% on the video instructions)

🌟 Ribbing (Ear Padding Band)

Make a slip knot. Chain 20 + chain 2 (total 22). This creates the ribbing height for an adult size.

Row 1: Skip 3 chains from hook. Make 1 DC in the 4th chain. Continue making DC stitches across the foundation chain. (This forms Row 1 of the ribbing.)

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Ignore the chain-2. Work 1 DC in the back loop only of each stitch across. Mark the first DC.

Row 3 onwards: Repeat Row 2 until the ribbing reaches approx. 18–19 inches when stretched (fits head size 22–23 inches).

Slip stitch the first and last rows together to form a loop.

🌟 Single Crochet Base Round

Work 2 SC into each row end around the ribbing — 2 SC in chain-2 space, 2 SC in each DC row end. Join with a slip stitch.

🌟 Shell Stitch Pattern

Row 1 (First Shell Row):

  • SC in first stitch
  • Skip 1
  • Make 5 DC (shell) in next stitch
  • Skip 1
  • SC in next stitch
  • Repeat around
Join with slip stitch.

Row 2 (Alternate Row):

  • Ch 3 = first DC
  • On top of the SC → work 5 DC (shell)
  • Skip 2
  • SC in middle DC of previous shell
  • Repeat around

Row 3 and onward:

Slip stitch into the middle DC of the shell. Repeat Row 1 and Row 2 alternately until you complete **10 rows** or reach **7 inches height**.

🌟 Decrease Rows (Shaping the Crown)

Row 11:

  • Ch 3 (counts as DC)
  • Invisible DC decrease over next 2 stitches
  • 1 DC in next stitch
  • Invisible DC decrease
  • Repeat around

Row 12:

Repeat Row 11.

Row 13 (Optional but recommended):

Repeat same decrease pattern to reduce the crown opening.

Row 14 (Final Crown Row – Half Double Crochet):

Use HDC and HDC invisible decreases all the way around to tighten the opening at the top.

🌟 Closing the Top

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread tapestry needle and weave in/out around last row. Pull tight to close the hole. Secure with knots and weave in tail.

🌟 Pom-Pom

Wrap yarn around fingers 30–40 times. Tie center, cut loops, brush lightly, trim into round shape. Attach to top of beanie and secure the ends.

Crochet Pumpkin Beanie for Babies (0–6 Months) πŸŽƒ – Free Pattern & Tutorial

If you are looking for a cute crochet Halloween project, this pumpkin beanie hat is perfect for newborns and babies up to 6 months old. It’s beginner-friendly, quick to make, and perfect as a handmade gift for fall, Halloween, or a baby shower. This step-by-step free pattern will guide you through the process of making a pumpkin stripe beanie with ribbed border and stem, so your little one can look extra adorable this festive season.

Crochet Pumpkin Beanie for Babie

🧢 Supplies You’ll Need

  • 4 ply medium weight acrylic yarn (Orange for body, Brown for stem)
  • Crochet hook – 4.5 mm
  • Tapestry needle & scissors
  • Stitch marker

Note: You can adjust yarn and hook size depending on availability. Just ensure your crown measurement matches the baby size you’re making for.

✨ Crochet Pumpkin Beanie Pattern (0–6 Months)

Round 1: Start with a magic ring. Work 10 double crochets (DC) into the ring. Slip stitch to join. (10 stitches)

Round 2: Chain 2 (not counted as a stitch). Work *1 DC, 1 Front Post DC (FPDC)* repeat around. Slip stitch to join. (20 stitches)

Round 3: *2 DC in first stitch, 1 FPDC in next* repeat around. Slip stitch to join. (30 stitches)

Round 4: *1 DC, 2 DC in next, 1 FPDC in next* repeat around. Slip stitch to join. (40 stitches)

Round 5: *2 DC, 2 DC in next, 1 FPDC* repeat around. Slip stitch to join. (50 stitches)

Rounds 6–11: Continue without increases. *4 DC, 1 FPDC* repeat around. This builds the height of the beanie while keeping the same 50 stitches.

Rounds 12–13 (Ribbed Border): Alternate *1 FPDC, 1 Back Post DC (BPDC)* around. This creates a stretchy ribbed brim. Perfect for a snug baby fit.

Stem: With brown yarn, chain 12. Starting in 3rd chain from hook, make Half Double Crochet (HDC) in each stitch across. Fasten off and attach to top center of the hat. Secure ends and weave in.

Your crochet pumpkin beanie is now complete! πŸŽƒ Perfect for Halloween photoshoots, baby’s first fall, or as a handmade seasonal gift.

πŸ“ Sizing Notes

This pattern is written for 0–6 months, with a crown width of around 4.5–5 inches. To make bigger sizes, simply add extra increase rounds before working the height rows. Always measure crown width before moving on to the body of the hat.

πŸ‚ Why You’ll Love This Pattern

  • Quick and beginner-friendly crochet project
  • Perfect handmade gift for baby showers & Halloween
  • Customizable for any size – toddlers, kids, or even adults
  • Fun seasonal crochet project that brings smiles!

The ribbed border gives the hat a professional look, and the stem adds the final pumpkin touch. You can even add a green leaf for extra cuteness!

πŸ“– Extra Crochet Tips

For best results, always check gauge and adjust hook size. Use soft baby-friendly yarn to avoid irritation. If making as a gift, consider pairing it with a crochet pumpkin cocoon or blanket for a matching set.

You can also experiment with different stitches like slip stitch stems, twisted cords, or even an I-cord for the pumpkin stem. Small variations make each hat unique.
