Easy Crochet Scrunchie Tutorial for Beginners (Step-by-Step Written Pattern)

Easy Crochet Scrunchie Tutorial for Beginners

Looking for a quick and beginner friendly crochet project? This easy crochet scrunchie tutorial is perfect for beginners who want to learn how to crochet hair accessories using basic stitches.

This crochet scrunchie is made by crocheting directly over a hair tie, which makes it stretchy, durable, and comfortable to wear. The fluffy texture and simple border make it look beautiful while staying easy to create.

Crochet Scrunchie

Materials Required

  • Lightweight yarn (100% acrylic or cotton blend)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Hair tie / elastic band
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Crochet Scrunchie Written Pattern (Beginner Friendly)

Row 1: Single Crochet Around Hair Tie

Start by making a slip knot and insert your crochet hook. Place the hair tie onto the hook. Hold the hair tie firmly on both sides.

Insert the hook into the center of the hair tie, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops to make a single crochet.

Continue making single crochet stitches closely next to each other around the entire hair tie. Stretch the hair tie occasionally and push stitches together to avoid gaps.

Once the hair tie is completely filled, join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. This completes Row 1.

Row 2: Double Crochet Increase for Fluffy Texture

Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet). Place a stitch marker on the third chain.

Into the same stitch, work 2 more double crochet stitches. This makes a total of 3 double crochet stitches in the same stitch.

In each stitch around, work 3 double crochet stitches. This creates a wavy, ripple effect and makes the scrunchie look fluffy.

Join with a slip stitch into the third chain of the starting chain 3.

Row 3: Border with Contrast Color

Attach a new color yarn. Chain 1 and make a single crochet in the same stitch.

Chain 2, then single crochet in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern: single crochet, chain 2 in each stitch around.

Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. Fasten off and cut yarn.

Finishing

Weave in all yarn tails using a tapestry needle. Make sure the yarn is secured and not visible on the front side. Trim excess yarn.

Your crochet scrunchie is now complete!

Crochet Scarf

Materials Required

  • 4 Weight Medium Acrylic Yarn (Loops & Threads Facets Acrylic or similar)

Pattern Notes

  • Foundation chain must be an odd number.

Foundation Chain

Begin with a slip knot.

Ensure the number of chains is odd.

Row 1 – Double Crochet Row

  1. Chain 2 (height chain – ignore).
  2. Make 1 double crochet in the first chain.
  3. Place a stitch marker in the first DC to track the stitch.
  4. Continue making 1 DC in each chain across.
  5. You will have the same number of DC stitches as your foundation chain.

Example: If you made 21 chains, you will have 21 double crochet stitches.

Row 2 – Mesh Pattern Row

  1. Chain 2 and turn.
  2. Make 3 double crochet stitches in the first three stitches.
  3. This creates a clean border.
  4. Chain 1.
  5. Skip the next stitch.
  6. Make 1 double crochet in the following stitch.
  7. Repeat: Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, 1 DC in next stitch.
  8. Continue until the last three stitches remain.
  9. Make 1 DC in each of the last three stitches.

This row creates the mesh or hollow square pattern.

Row 3 – Solid Row

  1. Chain 2 and turn.
  2. Make 3 double crochet stitches at the beginning.
  3. Then work into the mesh spaces:
  4. Make 1 DC in the chain-1 space.
  5. Make 1 DC on top of the previous DC.
  6. Repeat: 1 DC in chain space, 1 DC on top of DC.
  7. Continue across the row.
  8. Finish with 3 DC stitches at the end.

Now you will see the alternating pattern:

  • Solid Row
  • Mesh Row
  • Solid Row

Repeating the Pattern

Continue repeating:

  • Row 2 – Mesh Row
  • Row 3 – Solid Row

Repeat these rows until the scarf reaches your desired width.

The example scarf was made with 13 rows. For smaller samples you can make:

  • 9 rows
  • 11 rows
  • 13 rows

Always end with an odd number of rows.

Finishing the Scarf

  1. Once the desired size is reached, chain 1.
  2. Pull the yarn through and cut the yarn.
  3. Secure the final stitch.

Adding Tassels

  1. Wrap yarn around a book several times.
  2. Cut the loops to create strands.
  3. Take three strands together.
  4. Fold them in half.
  5. Insert hook into the chain-2 gap at the edge.
  6. Pull the folded yarn through.
  7. Pull the tail ends through the loop to secure.
  8. Repeat on alternate rows.

Attach tassels on both sides of the scarf.

Final Touch

Use a tapestry needle to weave the starting and ending yarn tails into the tassels to hide them neatly.

And that's it! You have created a beautiful handmade crochet scarf using a simple beginner-friendly pattern.
