- Foundation Chain Length: Twice the top length (example: 40 inches)
- Width: Divide your chest measurement by 4 (example: 10 inches)
- Neck Depth: Approximately 8 inches
- Armhole Depth: 8 to 9 inches (adjust for fit)
Written Crochet Pattern (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Foundation Chain
Start with a slip knot and make a foundation chain measuring twice the length of your desired top. For example, if your top length is 20 inches, your foundation chain should measure 40 inches.
Ensure the chain count is a multiple of 3 plus 1 additional chain. If needed to add of 1–2 chains to adjust the count, you can add them. It will not affect the top too much..
Step 2: Row 1 – Granny Stripe Pattern
Begin with chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet). In the same stitch, work 2 more double crochets to form a granny cluster.
Skip the next two chains and work 3 double crochets into the next chain. Repeat this pattern across the row:
- Granny cluster
- Skip 2 chains
- Granny cluster
The row will start and end with a granny cluster.
Step 3: Row 2
Chain 3 and turn your work. In this row, you will work granny clusters into the gaps from the previous row.
The second row will start and end with a gap.
Step 4: Row 3 and Beyond
For the third row, chain 3 and turn your work. Make 2 double crochets in the first gap to complete the first cluster.
Continue making granny clusters in every gap across the row. Alternate between Row 2 and Row 3 patterns until the rectangle reaches the required width.
In this tutorial, 25 rows were completed to achieve the desired width.
Making the Two Rectangles
Once the first rectangle is complete, fasten off and weave in the ends. Make a second rectangle with the same measurements.
Each rectangle measures approximately:
- Length: 40 inches
- Width: 10 inches
Marking Neck and Armholes
Fold both rectangles lengthwise and place them side by side. Mark the following:
- Front Neck Depth: 8 inches
- Back Neck Depth: 8 inches
- Armholes: 8–9 inches on each side
Use stitch markers to clearly mark all points before joining.
Joining the Panels
Using a tapestry needle and a long yarn tail, start sewing the panels together from the bottom up to the stitch marker.
Sew in one direction (front to back) and secure the join with small knots every 4–5 inches for strength and a clean finish.
Repeat the same joining process on all sides, leaving openings for the neck and armholes.
Finishing Touches
Once all sides are joined, weave in all loose ends securely. You can leave the top as it is or add a simple border if desired.
