Crochet Chessboard | Easy DIY Board Pattern to Complete Your Set

Complete your handmade Chess Set with this simple and beautiful Crochet Chessboard! This checkerboard mat is made using double crochet and color changes to alternate squares. It’s beginner-friendly, and a perfect finish to your 7-part crochet chess series!

Materials Required:

  • 4 ply cotton yarn – 2 contrasting colors (e.g. black & white)
  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Written Pattern – Crochet Chessboard

Make 32 squares in Color A and 32 squares in Color B.

Each square:
- ch 11
- Row 1: dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc across (9 dc)
- Row 2–5: ch 2, turn, dc in each st (9 dc)

Make 64 squares total.

Arrange the squares in alternating color pattern:
- 8 squares per row x 8 rows = 64 total

Use tapestry needle or whip stitch to join:
- First assemble rows horizontally
- Then join the rows vertically

Optional: Add border:
- sc around entire board using Color A or contrast color
- Add 3 sc in each corner

Finishing Touches:

  • Block the board with light steam to straighten edges
  • Sew felt or backing fabric underneath for extra support
