Complete your handmade Chess Set with this simple and beautiful Crochet Chessboard! This checkerboard mat is made using double crochet and color changes to alternate squares. It’s beginner-friendly, and a perfect finish to your 7-part crochet chess series!
Materials Required:
- 4 ply cotton yarn – 2 contrasting colors (e.g. black & white)
- 3 mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Written Pattern – Crochet Chessboard
Make 32 squares in Color A and 32 squares in Color B. Each square: - ch 11 - Row 1: dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc across (9 dc) - Row 2–5: ch 2, turn, dc in each st (9 dc) Make 64 squares total. Arrange the squares in alternating color pattern: - 8 squares per row x 8 rows = 64 total Use tapestry needle or whip stitch to join: - First assemble rows horizontally - Then join the rows vertically Optional: Add border: - sc around entire board using Color A or contrast color - Add 3 sc in each corner
Finishing Touches:
- Block the board with light steam to straighten edges
