How to Crochet Lord Jagannath | Free Amigurumi Written Pattern
Welcome to DIY_KraftZ! In this detailed tutorial, I am going to share the step-by-step pattern of making this crochet Jagannath. It is an advanced beginner pattern, so try to catch up with every step to get neat finishings. We will be covering the head, body, beautiful metallic crown, and a tiny peacock feather!
Materials Needed
- 4-ply fine weight 100% cotton yarn (Black/Gray, Blue, White, Red).
- Metallic thread (for crown and jewelry).
- Cotton embroidery threads (Yellow, Blue, Green).
- 2.5 mm, 3 mm, and 1 mm crochet hooks.
- 5 mm safety eyes with washers.
- Fabric glue and Hot glue gun.
- 1 mm foam sheet or cardboard.
- Pearl head pins, tapestry needle, and stuffing.
- 4 small pearls and a piece of floral wire.
Written Crochet Pattern
1. Head (Use Black/Gray Yarn & 2.5mm Hook)
- Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in the center. Pull tail to close. (6 sts)
- Round 2: 1 sc increase in each stitch around. (12 sts)
- Round 3: (1 sc, 1 sc inc) repeat 6 times. (18 sts)
- Round 4: (1 sc, 1 sc inc, 1 sc) repeat 6 times. (24 sts)
- Round 5: (3 sc, 1 sc inc) repeat 6 times. (30 sts)
- Round 6 - 13: 1 sc in each stitch around. (30 sts per row)
- Round 14: (3 sc, 1 invisible dec) repeat 6 times. (24 sts)
- Round 15: (1 sc, 1 invisible dec, 1 sc) repeat 6 times. (18 sts)
- Finishing: Cut yarn. Pull loop out of the last stitch. Thread tapestry needle, insert from front to back in the second stitch, then go back into the back loop and back bump of the last stitch. Make a knot on the inside.
2. Eyes & Facial Details
- Safety Eyes: Count 8 rows from the magic ring. Place pins between row 8 and 9, 5 stitches apart. Insert 5mm safety eyes and secure with washers inside. Stuff the head firmly.
- Eye Outline: Apply fabric glue around the eyes. Attach two lines of white yarn, followed by a third round of red yarn. Let dry completely.
- Nose: Take a small piece of gray yarn, loop it, and wrap the tail end 5-6 times around the center. Pull threads to create a knot. Secure between the eyes at the bottom red line.
- Smile & Tilak: Using fabric glue and red yarn, form a smile right under the nose. Use white yarn and glue to create a U-shaped Tilak (namam) centered between the eyes on rows 8 and 9.
3. Crown (Use Metallic + Cotton Yarn & 3mm Hook)
- Row 1: Make a slip knot and chain 28.
- Row 2: Skip the first chain. 8 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tc.
- Pod Stitch: Ch 2, insert needle into front loop and front post of the last tc, make a slip stitch.
- Continue Row 2: 1 tc, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 8 sc. Ch 1, cut yarn leaving a long tail, and fasten off.
- Tassels: Using white embroidery thread and a 1mm hook, thread pearls. Make a slip knot, push pearl up, and wrap starting tail around hook to pull through loops 3-5 times. Similarly make 3 more tassels. Now join two tassels as one set to make two sets. Attach to both sides of the crown.
4. Body (Use Blue Yarn & 2.5mm Hook)
- Round 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 8 sc in center. (8 sts)
- Round 2: 1 sc increase in each stitch around. (16 sts)
- Round 3: (1 sc, 1 sc inc) repeat 8 times. (24 sts)
- Round 4: (1 sc, 1 sc inc, 1 sc) repeat 8 times. (32 sts)
- Round 5: 1 sc in each stitch around. (32 sts)
- Round 6: 1 sl st (dummy stitch). 32 sc in Back Loop Only (BLO).
- Round 7 - 12: 1 sc in each stitch. (32 sts per row). Attach a 1mm foam sheet circle to the inside base with glue.
- Round 13: 1 sl st (dummy stitch). 32 sc in BLO. (32 sts)
- Round 14 - 18: 1 sc in each stitch. (32 sts per row)
- Round 19: (2 sc, 1 invisible dec) repeat 8 times. (24 sts)
- Round 20: (1 sc, 1 invisible dec, 1 sc) repeat 6 times. (18 sts)
- Finishing: Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Use the seamless finish technique and knot on the inside.
5. Dress Frills (Use Matching Yarn & 2.5mm Hook)
- Work into the front loops left from Round 13 of the body.
- Row 1: Attach yarn, ch 2. (3 dc, 1 dc inc) repeat around. Sl st to first dc.
- Row 2: Ch 2. (4 dc, 1 dc inc) repeat around. Sl st. (48 sts)
- Row 3: Ch 2. 1 dc in each stitch. (48 sts) Sl st.
- Row 4 (Frills): Ch 2. *Make a 5 dc shell in the same stitch. Skip 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, skip 2 sts*. Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to first dc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
6. Hands (Make 2 - Use Gray/Black Yarn)
- Round 1: Magic ring, 6 sc. Sl st to join.
- Round 2: Ch 1. (1 sc, 1 sc inc) repeat 3 times. Sl st to join. (9 sts)
- Round 3: Ch 1. 9 sc in BLO.
- Round 4: 9 sc. In the last stitch, change to the dress color yarn.
- Round 5 - 11: 9 sc in each round. Stuff lightly.
- Round 12: Fold flat. Crochet 4 sc across both layers to close. Fasten off.
7. Peacock Feather (Use Embroidery Threads & 1mm Hook)
- Round 1 (Yellow): Magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc. Sl st to join. Change to Blue yarn.
- Round 2 (Blue): Ch 1. 1 sc inc in each stitch. (12 sts). Sl st to join. Change to Green yarn.
- Round 3 (Green): Ch 1. (1 sc, 1 sc inc) repeat 2 times. 1 sc. 1 hdc inc. 1 dc. 1 pod stitch (ch 1, sl st in dc). 1 hdc inc. 1 sc, 1 sc inc, 1 sc, 1 sc inc. Sl st to first st. Fasten off.
- Assembly: Glue a folded piece of floral wire to the back. Wrap the stem with green yarn.
8. Final Assembly
- Head & Body: Sew the head to the body stitch by stitch using the front loops, pulling gently to attach securely. Add extra stuffing before closing completely.
- Hands: Pin the hands in place, secure temporarily with fabric glue, then sew them to the sides of the body.
- Jewelry & Details: Crochet chains with metallic yarn for a necklace and waistband. Decorate white yarn with sketch pens for a flower garland. Secure all pieces and the crown/feather using a hot glue gun for a neat, sturdy finish.
